Bad breath is a common problem, an unpleasant condition, which can cause embarrassment and toss the self-esteem and self-confidence and social life. The solution to dry mouth may be in artificial saliva prescribed by the dentist, usage of sugarless candy or increasing the fluid intake, as suggested by the healthcare experts. As tobacco also causes bad breath, and is a bad habit, one should try to quit the habit.

Bad breath can be a serious problem and a medical disorder like a local infection in the respiratory tract, post nasal drip, diabetes, liver or kidney ailment, chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis or gastrointestinal disturbance. If the dentist determines that the mouth is healthy, then the next step in the course of action is to refer to a specialist to know the cause of bad breath.

It is very important to maintain good oral health to reduce bad breath. Regular professional cleaning and checkup with regular visits to the dentist helps in keeping check of the bad breath. Constant halitosis should be reported to the dentist and a check should be kept on list of food intake and medications. Some medications may also create mouth odor. Good oral hygiene means brushing twice a day and removing the debris and plaque. Cleaning the tongue is as important as flossing and interdental cleaning. Mouthwashes generally do not have a long-lasting effect on bad breath and breath freshner may be used to hide unpleasant mouth odor. Extra help in controlling plaque can be taken by using a special antimicrobial mouth rinse. Mouth decay can be prevented by usage of fluoride mouth rinse.
